SEA Index is a tool developed by the Superyacht Eco Association to measure the energy efficiency of superyachts over 25 meters. An emanation of the Yacht Club de Monaco, the association is a pillar of the âMonaco Capital of Advanced Yachtingâ initiative.
Founded by the Yacht Club de Monaco, the Superyacht Eco Association aims to set the global standard for assessing and reducing the carbon footprint of yachts, guiding the sector toward more sustainable practices.
How SEA Index Works
- Step 1: Quick Online Assessment
Owners and captains can use the online Quick Tool Calculator to get an initial rating of their yachtâs CO2 emissions. This preliminary rating provides a useful snapshot and serves as a starting point toward the full certification.
- Step 2: Full Certification by Lloydâs Register, third-party verifier
Yachts that want to have a complete evaluation of their yachtâs emissions choose the full certification, where all data are independently verified by Lloydâs Register.
- Step 3: SEA Index Certificate & SEA Index Improvement Options
Once verified, the yacht is provided with the SEA Index Certificate, and the SEA Index Improvement Options document that explains how the yacht can reduce its impact on the environment by being less energy intensive.
- Step 4: Become a Member of the Superyacht Eco Association
Yachts that obtain the SEA Index certification are invited to join the Superyacht Eco Association, gaining access to various benefits at ports and marinas within our network.
Furthermore, the Emissions Operational Efficiency Method, developed in collaboration with RINA, enables yacht owners to calculate their yachtâs emissions based on actual fuel consumption, offering a complementary and detailed assessment.
By factoring in the impact of various fuel types, including biofuels, this methodology provides deeper insights into the environmental performance of superyachts.
Benefits for the Yachting Community
The SEA Index isn’t just for yacht owners; itâs designed to bring together the entire yachting community.
By building a global network of stakeholders, including shipbuilders, marinas, and innovators, they are fostering a culture of sustainability that benefits the entire sector.
As more yacht owners seek ways to reduce their environmental impact, the SEA Index provides the platform to do so. The initiative is recognised by owners, Ports and Marinas around the Mediterranean and beyond, helping to create a responsible future around the yachting sector.
